There are nice hooks. From my .muttrc:

# where i keep my mailboxes, this directory is the starting directory,
# used with '=' char
set folder=~/mutt

# get a list from all mbox files, also mailing lists
mailboxes `echo ~/mutt/ml/* ~/mutt/inbox ~/mbox ~/mutt/outbox`

# make mutt recognice this mailing lists in order to rewrite target
# addresses properly
subscribe debian-user-de debian-doc debian-devel debian-russian allegro agp lt2k alsa-user-owner conductors debian-events-de debian-private debian-x debian-menthors debian-events-eu pingos debian-boot debian-user openbios

Or press TAB 2-3 times to get the overview.
