I'd strongly suggest resolving your apt-get issues.  Having a working
packaging system is an extremely useful thing.

In general:

    xbase-clients
    xserver-common
    xserver-<your video card>

...and work out the rest of the dependencies from the package
description itself.  You can view this with 'dpkg -s <package>', or by
unarchiving the .deb with 'ar'.
