I had a similar problem on a new box with an 'all-in-one' motherboard.
When I left X I had a very fuzzy text screen, it looked like many
pixels were missing. If I went to X again & quit, the screen text was
fine. If I had 2 X sessions open and switched from one to the other,
the display would shrink to a small portion in the center. Ctrl-Alt +
or - would bring it back again. This was with X 4.0x and SiS 6300
chipset (unsupported).
My solution was to buy a good video card and quit using the one built
on the MB. Works normally since I installed the new card.
:-) HTH, YMMV, HAND :-)

It is easier to change the specification to fit the program than vice
versa.
