This may be a bug in the package. Kill the configuration process, if you can't <ctrl>-C it, try to find what process it is from another shell (ps, pstree, and related tools are your friends). First try: $ apt-get install --fix-missing or: $ dpkg --configure -a ...which may get the configuration worked out for you. If not, try to configure X per instructions previously posted here. If you're still stuck, you can look in /var/lib/info/<package>* to find list, postinst, prerm, and postrm scripts, and try to work out what's going on from there. I'd suggest you can try running the preinst and postinst scripts manually, but I'm not convinced that this works (apt sets environment?). Comments, anyone? -- Karsten M.
