New binutils.
You need to edit /usr/src/linux-2.4.2/linux/arch/i386/boot/Makefile, and
replace '-oformat' with '--oformat'
Then run make-kpkg clean; make-kpkg <whatever> kernel_image

> make [2]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/linux/arch/i386/boot'
