Can't build alsa-utils

When I try to build alsa-utils from source I get:
wheat:/usr/local/src/alsa-utils-0.9.0beta4# debian/rules binary
dh_testdir
aclocal $ACLOCAL_FLAGS
aclocal: configure.in: 13: macro `AM_PATH_ALSA' not found in library
make: *** [config] Error 1

The file aclocal.m4 seems to define the macro.

My build configuration is unusual in that I have a woody system but am
building from sid source. I have built the drivers from the
alsa-source package.

Also of interest:
wheat:/usr/local/rootlog# apt-get -s build-dep alsa-utils
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  alsa-headers byacc libasound2 libasound2-dev
0 packages upgraded, 4 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Inst libasound2 (0.9.0beta4-1.1 Debian:testing)
Inst alsa-headers (0.9+0beta4-5 Debian:testing)
Inst byacc (1.9-13 Debian:testing)
Inst libasound2-dev (0.9.0beta4-1.1 Debian:testing)
Conf libasound2 (0.9.0beta4-1.1 Debian:testing)
Conf alsa-headers (0.9+0beta4-5 Debian:testing)
Conf byacc (1.9-13 Debian:testing)
Conf libasound2-dev (0.9.0beta4-1.1 Debian:testing)

Since I have the source for the alsa drivers, it strikes me that some
of these packages may be unnecessary.

If this is a bug, I'm happy to report it, but I'm not so sure it is.
Cany anyone tell me what's going on, or how to fix it?

Thanks.

By the way, the reason I'm doing this is that I need alsactl with same
version as the alsa drivers I built from source. Since the alsa-utils
package with the right version is only in unstable, I thought it would
be easier and safer to get the source and then build it.
