Well, Miss Oberin, my apologies for mistaking your gender. Actually, as I was 
reading down the list, I saw your post about the journalling filesystem. I 
realized my mistake when I saw the "giggles" you had you put in your e-mail.

Now, getting back to your problem. I am not an expert at X, but I would urge 
you to replace the relevant lines (shown above) in your XF86Config-4 files 
and see if the situation improves.

     Subsection "Display"
         Depth       24
         Modes       "640x480" "800x600"
         ViewPort    0 0
     EndSubsection

As you can see, I have removed the "Virtual" line and made a change to the 
"Modes" line. My reasoning here is that the "Virtual" setting is redundant 
since "Modes" already includes "800x600". The explanation provided by Mr. 
Miller should prove adequate.
