AFAIK the main problem with 3c509 nics is that they are not really
plug-n-pray at all!  One used to have to use some proprietary 3com tool
in msdog to turn off the "plug-n-play" 3com claims it does, which it
doesn't really, it's the 3com marketing people who gave it that name,
not any technical people.  When you turn off the "wizard" mode, the
braindamage disappears and the card is perfectly usable again.  Nowadays,
you can also do it in linux iirc, with some tools from www.scyld.com.
