You could try move /var/cache/apt to another partition which has lots
of free space, and then creating a symlink from the new directory to
/var/cache/apt.
For example, if the /usr partition has a lot of free space:
mkdir /usr/var/cache
cd /var/cache
mv apt /usr/var/cache
ln -s /usr/var/cache/apt apt
apt-get...
