Serial numbers don't really matter.  What you want is to write down
the part numbers on all the chips (ie big black things, not other
little components).  Send them to the list.  Someone here is bound to
recognize the manufacturer's abbreviation at the beginning of the
number and know where to look to find a data sheet on the part.  For
example TI is Texas Instruments and NS could be National
Semiconductor.

Also try using minicom.  It won't get you on the internet, but it can
tell you if the modem works or not.
