Answering my own question here so no one else wastes their time. I took another
look at XF86Config file and its fontpath lines. There was a new entry for
/usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/lib/X11/fonts/Type1. Since that reference wasn't there
prior to my experimentations I removed it. Once I did the double fonts
disappeared.
Strange! At least to me.
