it's still a terminal emulator. the dial function was added because
one primary use of terminal emulators was BBS.

minicom will not speak ppp for you and thus will not authenticate you.
and wvdial is cumbersome and too complex - i never get it to work
right. in any case, if you persist, then make sure that you have the
correct settings for PAP, along with the entries in pap-secrets.
furthermore, try "Stupid Mode" for wvdial.conf (man wvdial.conf)
