As a suffix to this, I'd recommend going and combing through a bunch of the 
documentation at www.linuxdoc.org. It's a community maintained site, with 
tons and tons and tons of great info. A good chunk of the "how do I?" 
questions can be answered there. Of course, a list like this is a good one 
too, although for something as broad as "how do I install an ethernet card?" 
it's tough to do more than point you in the right direction. Still, learning 
by doing it yourself and reading the documentation is the Debian (and really 
the Linux) way of doing things. It'll make you much much more competent with 
your machine than you would have guessed. Good luck!
