> Boot from your rescue floppy, mount your / partition as > /mnt, and change root's password to * (no password). That is, vi /mnt/etc/passwd (or /etc/shadow if it exists) and modify the root line's password field. Then umount /mnt and reboot. root can login w/o a password prompt. Then use passwd to set a new one.
