No, version 3.3.6 will work.

The key points are :

    o  use the SVGA server  (the first line in /etc/X11/Xserver
        should be /usr/X11/bin/XF86_SVGA, or whatever the full path to
        the xserver is)

    o  specify driver "svga" in the 'Screen' section

    o  use the "no_accel" option to the video card,  on my system
        trying to use accel causes the background to be totally messed
        up (often a bright pink color), sometimes the fg doesn't even
        draw over that messed up bg

I have 1200x1024 @ 24bpp @ ~60-70 Hz (I can see some flicker depending
on how close I look and what colors are being displayed).

If you want my XF86Config file to compare against, just ask.
