The command should have been "fdisk -l /dev/hda".  The output should
be the same as the p command within fdisk, ie.:

>    Device Boot    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
> /dev/hda1   *         1        61    489951   83  Linux
> /dev/hda2            62       122    489982+  82  Linux swap
> /dev/hda3           123      3649  28330627+  83  Linux

Do you mean for /dev/hda1 to be the /boot partition?  Could there be 
a >1024 cylinder problem with booting from /dev/hda3?
