  press alt-F7 (ctrl-alt-F1-6 to get to text console) to see invisible X
server

  if you are running xdm use:

  /etc/init.d/xdm stop 

  to stop xdm (and X server), if you just run straight X (using e.g.
startx) you can pres ctrl-alt-backspace to quit X server.
