1. My .xsession file:

sawfish &
exec gnome-session

2. This is cause you have no windowmanager loaded! If you have the
newest gnome, version 1.4.x, you should use sawfish to have the best
support of windowmananger for gnome. If you use the gnome version of
potato you can use sawmill. You can use most other windowmanagers.
But sawmill or sawfish are the best i mean.
