apt-get trouble

I'm have a heck of a time with apt-get following a manual install of
perl-5.6.1. Following is a transcript of the errors. I'm thinking the
fastest way to correct the problem (been chasing it for 3 days now) would
be to uninstall perl (both my manual install and force a purge on all
.debs), and then:
$ dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall | grep perl \
| cut -s -f1 > file
$ dpkg --set-selections < file
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get dist-upgrade
Will do what I'm wanting to do (basically get me back to ground zero)?
