Re: ATI Radeon compatibility

To use a Radeon with any sort of Linux you need Xfree86 version 4.0.2 or newer. This is available under Debian; you will need to install Debian, and then install the packages to get the new Xfree86. Packages for the current Xfree86 are available for the testing (woody) and unstable (sid) versions. Also, Progeny Debian 1.0 comes with Xfree86 4.0.2 right on the install CD.

If you wish to play 3D games, you will need a 3D driver for Xfree86; this is called a "DRI" driver. Xfree86 does not currently support DRI for a Radeon, but the 4.1.0 release (expected within a few weeks) should offer this support. (Actually, the developers' code for Xfree86 does contain the DRI support for Radeon, but it will no doubt have a few problems. If you need 3D urgently you can try building Xfree86 from the latest developers' source code.)

Note that ATI has released the information that was needed for Radeon support, and so Radeon is a good choice for Linux. Radeon soon should be fully working in all versions of Linux, and once it is fully working it will be supported pretty much forever.
