x setup problems - garbled interface

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

a few details to start:-
monitor: tatung tm3401
graphics: onboard (dell dimension p120)
vertrefresh: 50-87
horizsync: 31.5-35.5
x server: svga
os: debian 2.2r3 (potato)

the problem:
i've been trying to get the above lot in
some sort of working order, and am currently
trying to get a working xf86conf.
i was getting a load of "No valid modes found."
type errors, so i commented out most of the
modelines to try and find out something more
 specific.
unfortuately now when i run startx it drops out
and all the text on the screen is garbled
(this is across all tty) so i can't look at the
error messages at all to get an idea of what's
 happening.

has anyone seen this sort of thing before?
 any ideas?

ps. the only modeline i've got now is:
Modeline "640x400" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525
(all the modelines i've had were produced by xf86config
 using the data above).

to infinity and beyond.
