you can use the "keyboard buffer overrun"-trick -- try to hold one key
of the keyboard when you're powering on the laptop then there should
come up the message "keyboard error ... " and you're in the BIOS
try the "F1" or the "ESC"-key first - i'm not sure which one works for
me

in times of "potato" there were special "tecra boot-disks" which solved
some problems with toshiba laptops
IIRC the second disk of a potato cd-set was also bootable with the tecra
boot-disk
