CD drive not recognised

Can somebody please help? I'm a Linux newbie doing a first-time setup of Potato.

I changed my bios to allow CDROM boot and was able to begin installation from the CD. The machine will now boot from the hard disk, rescue disk etc. and I am now at the apt configuration stage, but Linux apparently can't recognise the CD drive (although it is mentioned during boot-up). Also I couldn't mount the CD during an earlier stage of setup. The device seems OK as I have been able to use it for the installation thus far and it also worked previously on the same machine under Windows. There is obviously a setting I have to change, so could you spell out for me what I have to do and HOW to do it?

Thanks,
Barry
