This makes sense.  Bootloader seems to access to these files during
booting. Just think your mobo is old and can access only below 1024 cyl
throgh bios.   /boot partition is below 1024 cyl because kernel reside
in it.

I use mbr/lilo and each lilo usually multi boot many kernels and many
root combination.  Also each lilo in /dev/hda1-/dev/hda4 boot each
other.  Redundant multiboot.

Never botherd GRUB yet.
