I've used the /etc/inittab line

# Action on special keypress (ALT-UpArrow).
kb::kbrequest:/usr/bin consolechars -d

to execute consolechars when returning to a VC corrupted by the
X server (Avance cards). The benefit of this method is that it
*isn't* a shell command and can be run whatever other program is
already running in the VC.
