problems with xfree86 3.3.6

I'm running xfree86 3.3.6 under debian potato.

For no reason that I can fathom, this morning I turned on the PC, and tried
to 'startx'.

It gave me an error - 

"Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'"

can someone help me with this? It's a work machine so I need it working.
