Refer to the installation instructions that come with the software.
Procedures will vary by particular component.

Where possible, you should install third-party software under /usr/local
or /opt.  On my own systems, I symlink /opt to /usr/local, though some
admins prefer maintaining these as separate filesystems, as
/usr/local/opt, or other schemas.

You might also want to explore stow, a utility to manage third-party
installations.  Don't use it myself, but it's there, and for this
purpose.
