I believe that ~/.xinitrc is only used either by startx or
kdm/xdm. I'm not 100% sure so I will try this if I'm home.

The program staying up is xplanetbg. This is a bigger problem because
it calls every 1200 seconds xplanet to render a backgroundimage. This
takes about 7 seconds on my k6-2/333. If I start/stop X some time
xplanet starts too often.
