hi.

this mailing list (debian-user) is a loose association of
people from here and there who ask and answer questions
regarding the debian release of linux.

if you want to know more about the debian incarnation of linux,
you could scan the website at http://www.debian.org/ or have
your favorite online search-engine look for 'debian linux'.

i don't think the official debian team members offer a specific
catalog of items, but there is plenty of free software to
download for various different hardware platforms.

if you like, you can purchase a CD for anominal fee ($10 u.s. or
so) that contain the latest debian release. it's much simpler to
install from CD than from floppy disk or via the 'net, from what
i hear. once you're up-and-running with debian, keeping it
up-to-date is a snap, thanks to the 'apt' programs (which makes
debian a much more robust version of linux than red hat, from
what i can tell).

if you have questions about debian/gnu linux, this is the place
to ask them. :)

hope you manage to join the growing ranks of happy debian users
world-wide!
