You *definately* should have ifconfig, which, by the way, lives in /sbin (thus,
it is not in regular users' $PATH by default). If you *really* screwed it up,
download the "libc6" package again (by hand - do NOT remove it first, then
install) - and reinstall it (dpkg -i libc6*.deb). If it complains about
something (dependancies, for instance), try dpkg --force-depends -i libc6*.deb.
If this still doesn't work, try dpkg --force-help.
