kernel compile error

Hi folks. Any one know of what I'm doing wrong trying to compile in a
new 2.4.2 kernel? I'm running debian unstable, kernel 2.2.18pre21 and
want to use kernel 2.4.2....I got the source code from kernel.org.....OK,
then I went through the usual steps that have worked for me in the
past....

# make dep
# make clean
# make bzImage
# make modules
# make modules_install

OK, then when I go to copy the bzImage file to /boot/, it's not there. In
fact, I the reran bzImage step and in fact it cuts out with an error
message....I doesn't compile the source code....Anybody know what I'm doing
wrong? I am migrating from RedHat and maybe I'm assuming things I
shouldn't be....Any clues?

Thanks folks,
Eric
