Just asking the obvious: did you do a dpkg -i <name of kernel
package.deb>?  Did you run lilo after doing the dpkg -i?  (or does the
dpkg install run lilo for you?  I have never been sure about that.  Do
you select the 2.4.2 kernel after rebooting?
