Hmm. I've been working on man-db for unstable, so I'd be interested to
track this down.

Nic, could you send me the output of 'strace man ls', run as root? (Bits
of man are setuid, so it's awkward to strace it as an unprivileged
user.)

Also, is this the security update (2.3.16-1.1)? That had build problems
on alpha; it doesn't sound like quite the same symptoms, but it's
possible.
