Which module did you compile? (I hope you compiled it as a module...)
How did you try to load it? modprobe?
Was it loaded? ($/sbin/lsmod)

If you use a kernel module you simply need to load it (maybe adjust
mixer settings) and it should work. There is certainly no need for a
/etc/sound.conf
