Aha! The file ttmkfdir.linuxbin.glibc2 *is* the precompiled executable.
OT: packaging of this utility leaves much to be desired -- untars into
$PWD (I always check first, and caught it, but...), make instructions
are...terse. And it would be nice to say "Oh, BTW, I've precompiled the
GNU/Linux version for Intel/glibc2.
So:
$ ./ttmkfdir.linuxbin.glibc2 -d /usr/share/fonts/truetype \
-o /usr/share/fonts/truetype/fonts.dir
...did the trick. Restart xfs and fire up X. True type fonts.
Though I wouldn't mind knowing how to build this mother.
