Getting better fonts in Debian is not simple. Each application gets their fonts their own way. Start with the howto on font deuglification. It makes a difference if you have XFree version 3 or 4. If you want Netscape to have readable fonts (like TrueType) you must use a font server and create a fonts.alias file. The deuglification howto references all the places you need to go to get the fonts and font software for whichever version of XFree you are using and what to do for the more popular applications.
