I had the same problem with my serial mouse.
Here is what works for me; you can adapt to your ps/2 mouse:
for gpm.conf, use directly /dev/psaux
for XF86Config, use /dev/mouse
in the /dev directory, create a symlink by typing:
ln -s /dev/psaux /dev/mouse
Somehow in that way both applications finally share the device.
