Well, since no one replied so far i try to give a little feedback. The port 16001, if i recall
correctly, is used by esound. Is your sound card running correctly? You could try to stop the
daemon with "esdctl off" command.

Look for a stale "/tmp/.esd/socket" file, and if so try removing it, or try remove the session
files in your "~/.gnome" directory...
