That would do it...

The driver file system struture changed quite a bit in 2.4

That's not right.  Could it have been a bad floppy?

Did you try the Debian rescue floppy?

I'd hate to say it (as I almost *never* re-install, unless it's Windows :)
but you might have to.

And be carefull with the 2.4 kernel next time :)
