Have a look at xrdb and grdb. xrdb is part of X, grdb is a GNOME
equivalent. I use a lot of stuff at http://artramp.artwiz.org/ (dig
around in his files section for .Xdefaults), but not all of it with
xrdb, then merge grdb so that many Xlib and Xaw applications inherit my
GTK color scheme.
