Please keep lines < 80 chars.
If you are using a command line FTP client, then you have to enter
anonymous as the username, and your email address as the password.
Most people download from via hyperlinks on their web browser,
and most web browsers are smart enough to default to
so called "anonymous FTP" whenever they see a URL starting with
ftp://. In other words, this method is the norm for public
FTP sites.

The problem I have is in attempting to FTP into the debian site to get the
image files it asks for a username and password.
I could not find on the site, where to get these.
Do you know?

If you want to install Debian GNU/Linux via FTP, then you will need
to download some floppy drive images, and then work from there
(presuming whatever hardware you connect to the internet with is
supported by the boot disks). Check out
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/install.en.html for more
detailed installation instructions.
