This is at the bootable CD or floppy prompt.  From the boot how-to, I
tried 'aic7xxx=extended,no_reset'.   So it would be 
'linux aic7xxx=extended,no_reset'?  I'm not sure what image name it
would want when the OS is not installed.

Yeah, I think it's AIC-7859 or something like that.
