My experience when I installed potato one month ago was very similar to
yours. Apparently LILO doesn't
like to be installed in an logiacal partition. I solved the problem
creating a small primary boot partition
for Debian, /hda2 (150 Mb should be OK) . You should mark it as bootable,
use cfdisk for this. In this
primary partition you should install LILO. You can put the swap and the
rest of Debian in the extended partition where the logical windows data
partition resides.
