Terminals/dim screens = use bold everywhere but dselect is...dim

Do color monitors die after four years? The boot messages are barely
visible; seems they've gotten worse over two months since I installed
Debian 2.2. I've got the monitor buttons for brightness and contrast
at maximum, setterm=bold within Linux, so I can see. And X allows me
to look at dselect.

Where can I find "HOWTOs to configure this 'terminal', a magitronic
with an ati Mach 64 card? What script can I initiate setterm=bold in (or
a log file) to see _all_ the boot messages? (booting from a floppy)

Any assistance would be appreciated.
