Could you please give an example of how it does not install
right? There is a prgram called script that'll allow you to create a
typescript of the commands typed and the system response

The program that is run is in (for version 2.2.18, for example)
/var/lib/dpkg/info/kernel-image-2.2.18.postinst
However, that is in perl, and may be complex to decipher. I assume,
since the postinst works for you, that you have a minimally working
/etc/lilo.conf file, as well as a mbr that works.
All the postinst actually does with lilo is run
/sbin/lilo
after making sure the lilo.conf is set up correctly, so I am at a
loss why just trying lilo on the command line does not work. Output
of lilo -v would help a lot.
