Still MORE odd ps2 mouse behaviour on Debian 2.2r2 w.kernel (ANY)

Ok I have tried recompiling kernels 2.2.13 from kernel.org which was
working well. Also 2.2.17 from kernel.org; 2.2.18pre21 from Debian;
2.2.18 from kernel.org. I also tried upgrading gpm to the woody version.
I completely reinstalled Debian on 2 clean reformatted disks. The result
is the same on all of them. The mouse works fine in X with gdm and
enlightenment & gnome on all of these setups. All of the X apps seems to
work fine. The mouse does not work in the standard console screen. It
will not do anything except highlight stuff. No point or click registers
any action. Previous to the new installation the mouse worked fine. It
is the same mouse that I have used for 2 years, a simple 2 button ps2 by
mitsumi. It works fine in windows on the same hardware. i also tried a 3
button ps2 scroll mouse with the same exact result. The mouse also does
not work properly in any x-terminal window. It does not work with mc
either in the console.
My gpm.conf is below.

device=/dev/psaux
responsiveness=
repeat_type=raw
type=ps2
append=""

Any suggestions please....
Could the settings in console-tools be causing this? I did make some
changes there to get rid of a problem with my keyboard number pad
beeping and not working during the x-window login procedure.
