Strange behavior in X

I'm getting some weird display behavior in X and I need some help. I
do a lot of work using virtual consoles. Quite often when I'm in a
virtual console, if I press ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to X, my screen
goes blank. I try to go back to a virtual console by pressing
ctrl-alt-f1 (or f2 - f6) and the screen remains blank. I have to
reboot the computer by either pressing ctrl-alt-delete (which usually
works) or by pressing the reset button or power switch. This wouldn't
be so bad if it were a once-in-a-while thing, but it happens very
often, like more than once a day. One of the reasons I switched to
Linux from Windoze was because I could keep it running for
days/weeks/months without having to reboot. With this weird behavior
I'm getting, I have to reboot my computer several times a day, which
isn't much better than Windoze. Can anybody help me out here? Thanks.
