Same situation here. I just managed to burn my motherboard, having now
a mix some new and some old hardware. Videocard is a trident 3d image
9750. I was waiting for someone having the same problems. In my case,
starting a (helix) gnome-session will kill the X server immediately;
running another wm will trigger the freezing when using any gnome
program for a few minutes, even with 3.3.6.
