What version of sendmail? and do you have anything else using SASL?
Please make sure you're at the recent sendmail release (8.11.1-?).

Do you have define(`confDONT_BLAME_SENDMAIL'...) in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc?
if so, add GroupReadableSaslFile to the list.

You should probably take a peek at the sample access file:
/usr/share/doc/sendmail/examples/examples-db/access if you have dialup users,
or want to limit relay/access to sendmail.
