fvwm95, xf86_svga or a smoked gfx-card
Hi!
After a power outage a few hours ago, I fsck´ed (no problems found),
and tried to re-startx. X and fvwm95 came up, but with a somewhat
spooky colormap, like some kind of green (eg the background, which was
simply grey) was missing.
I´ve re-ran XF86Setup, apt-get remove´d + install´ed fvwm95 + -icons,
no change.
I´ve compared the whole /etc/X11, /usr/lib/X11 and /usr/X11R6 to the
last backup, no differences found.
As a last resort I´ve tried switching from 1280x1024x8bpp to
1152x864x16bpp and, et voila, everythings back to normal, obviously
except resolution and color-depth :(
I actually like 1280x1024 because that way I don´t have to resize all
and every remote X-session, so I´m quite at a loss here.
Any ideas/hints/FMs to go read?
The card is a Matrox Mystique/2MB on a potato (except the 2.0.38
kernel) system.
OT: Have I got the math right ;-?
1280x1024x8bpp = 1280*1024*8 bits memory requirements eg 1280*1024*8/8
bytes? IOW ~1.3 MB whereas 1152x864x16bpp ~1.9 MB? Because that would
mean I´m now using more mem on the gfx-card than before so I can´t
quite believe to have simply smoked the RAM...
TIA,
&rw
